Tech-site talk that Apple will introduce fresh colour options for the next iPhone has been rife for months. But today we can probably afford the chatter a bit more credibility after tell-tale images of parts purportedly intended for the handsets leaked online.

After similar leaks in recent weeks, today saw snaps of a gold SIM tray crop up for a third time.

The existence of the re-sprayed part, which usually comes in silver only, is being interpreted by some industry watchers as a sign that the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 will come in a gold colourway.

The images, which come to us courtesy of Chinese site Weibo, also reveal that other parts for the handset are significantly smaller. That could mean two things.

It either means that the next-gen iPhone will be slimmer bit of kit. Or it could be that Apple is clearing space for extra parts, a more powerful processor or larger battery, or even Near Field Communication technology.

Earlier rumours indicated that Apple might be planning as many to bring an iPhone to market this year in gold, orange, navy, blue, white and grey colour options, echoing the hues used for its iPod range.

Conjecture also suggests that the phone will show up in September and may or may not be accompanied by a low-cost model featuring a plastic shell.
